The compositions he produced for Kitzler he regarded as “homework,” as studies for later works. Thus he wrote to Rudolf Weinwurm on September 7, 1862: “Only I can’t set out with any compositions, because I still have to study. We are already doing instrumentation and then the symphony, which, as you know, is also merely sonata form. […] Later, next year, I’ll surely be busy composing. Right now it’s just mostly homework. ” This was the moment when Bruckner felt ready for church music. ”5 The studies with Kitzler have a special importance for his compositional development.

It was reserved for his Seventh Symphony to bring about the breakthrough for his so long ignored, misunderstood and often derided oeuvre. It was the first work of Bruckner’s that really earned great successes and thereby paved the way to the concert halls for the other symphonies as well. Shortly after its path-breaking Munich performance under 35 Hermann Levi’s baton on March 10, 1885, the Seventh began a triumphant advance through the world’s major metropolises. The news of the great success of this performance quickly reached Vienna and did not fail to have an effect there.

That drew the attention of the Wagner conductor Hermann Levi (1839-1900) to the Seventh Symphony, and he performed it to great success on March 10, 1885, in Munich.
