But first, there is a need to identify the battlefield, and that is not always as simple as it first sounds. In his chapter Bruce Prideaux raises the issue — where does the battlefield exist? He notes the changing patterns of war and how, over time, war involves civilian populations and the conflict is fought over cyber networks as much as in the field, and where strikes are initiated, several hundreds if not thousands of miles away from where the final weapon lands.

To many, when looking at these places, they appear empty and devoid of interest. The relative lack of built structures, their inert appearance and the empty open space can mean that the significance of the site can be difficult to appreciate, and so remains to observers as just a vacant space, lacking any specific focus. But it is only one viewpoint.
