Turn left and go under the old railway bridge to begin an easy 4-mile walk along the old railway track. This was formerly the East Grinstead – Tunbridge Wells railway, formed 51 BEST SUSSEX WALKS by the East Grinstead, Groombridge and Tunbridge Wells Railway Company and operated by the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway. Failure to comply with official requirements meant that although work began on the line in July 1863, opening was delayed four times and when it was finally opened on 1 October 1866 the local press was so tired of waiting that they did not report it.
