In his seminal work, The Strengths of Black Families (1972), he describes this kinship-oriented informal adoption process in detail: Since formal adoption agencies have historically not catered to non-whites, blacks have had to develop their own network for informal adoption of children.
The mother stated that they all were still traumatized by the event. The therapist first legitimized the fears and the anger that the family was experiencing as a normal reaction to a very traumatic situation. The 7-year-old had become the focus of the family’s concern. The therapist was able to relabel this as a family problem and focus on their need to support each other through this crisis. In a later session, it became clear that one of the factors that had prevented the family from “pulling together” to support each other was that the decision to move had been rushed and problematic.
