Finally, after seven months of endless paperwork requests from the big bank with regard to the SBA loan—paperwork requests that I started to think were designed just to make us go away—the big bank would only part with a fraction of the requested amount for the mostly federally guaranteed SBA loan. The big bank finally made that small loan, but to do it they tied up almost $1 million in business and personal assets as security for the $80,000 of comparatively expensive five-year financing. The loan was something, and by the time it actually funded, we really needed it, but it was not nearly enough to make us strong, and so things continued hand-to-mouth.

When I got back to the office one sunny Monday in September, there was a crisp-looking set of financial statements on my desk from August. I assumed that things at the brewery would be as good as I felt in that moment. I picked up the statements and automatically flipped to the last page of the income statement. Due to some substantial general journal entries (the “adjustments” I mentioned earlier) that had to be made to accurately report expenses from earlier in the year (though I would only learn that later), there were strange red symbols on the bottom line of the income statement that I was sure couldn’t be numbers as I knew them.
