To many interpreters, academic and popular, violence played out the struggles of the West, the fight between good and evil; right and wrong; just and unjust; strong and weak with violent and Manichean clarity. It is always tempting to have a simple explanation for why regions evolve the way they do, why history is portrayed the way it is, and true to this simplification, popular literature, mythology, folklore, and commercial films have rarely shied away from simplifying the evolution of the American West.
