Noticing that one of Professor Moore's major achievements at Southern Illinois University was the staging of a successful Lawrence-Joyce Conference in 1958, the committee decided to ask him if he would agree to the staging of a Lawrence Conference on campus if, this time, he did not have to do all the administrative work. To our relief, he agreed at once and with enthusiasm, probably because we, with less Page xii than Machiavellian subtlety, did not acknowledge that the Conference was a roundabout means of getting him to accept a Festschrift.

I go, and (to my shame I confess) I am bored by his fine, cultivated voice and manner, and by the book he is reading aloud to us. I think it was Pride and Prejudice. I am in one of those amorphous emotional states that can assail a young man. I am out of my cultural depth. I think only of contemporary love and lust. And I have never learned to listen. Along about the third grade my teachers began the insistence on silent reading. We were not even to move our lips, let alone voice those wonderful complexities of sound and meaning as near to us as Mother Goose.
